I attended my first Winter Camping Symposium, and I’m already planning to go next year.
The symposium was refreshing. People came together to share their interest in adventuring, nature, and winter. It was heart warming to see a group of people focused on what makes us common, in a world that so often focuses on what makes us different.
The symposium took place at Camp Miller on Sturgeon Lake.
Kuume and I stayed in one the dog friendly “Wedges”. They are small heated rooms with double bunk beds.
The first thing I learned about was “hot tenting”. Tenting with a heat source. It’s common to use a portable wood stove.
The second thing I learned was: Snowtrekker makes awesome winter tents.
I was able to tour some of the tents. They were setup warm and cozy inside — just like the tents from the Harry Potter books.
Stoves from Four Dog Stoves were really popular, especially the titanium ones.
This poutine was made by Chow Haul. They were on site for breakfast and two dinners. The food was great!
I was lucky to attend a tarp session by Dan Cooke from Cooke Custom Sewing. He is a legend.
I met so many gentle souls at the event. I had a lot of fun.
The last night we gathered around a large fire and listened to Four Mile Portage.
